THE MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS

After the events of September 11, 2001, it became clear that our worst dreams could become reality and that we will likely face significant challenges in this new millennium. As we cope with this realization, we find ourselves asking, will we be ready when the next disaster arises? What can I do to help my family, my friends, and my community when that day comes?

Your local health district is working with national, state and local governments and civic agencies to develop and coordinate disaster response to a variety of different hazards ranging from natural disasters to explosive, nuclear, biological and chemical terrorism. Volunteers are desperately needed to provide assistance and depth to our existing response teams.

Volunteers can be:

Working in their profession

Inactive in their profession

What is the Medical Reserve Corps?

The MRC is a volunteer group that brings health professionals and others together to support local public health, emergency and medical services. As the events of September 11 unfolded, many Americans reacted by offering to help. To be ready to provide the rapid response needed in a disaster, volunteers need to be trained and organized. A key function of the MRC will be to provide members with that specialized training and preparation.
